New Atlantis 2020 Series

Davis Rogan is a New Orleans songwriter, bandleader, DJ and raconteur who is the inspiration for the Treme character Davis McAlary, played by actor Steve Zahn. Rogan combines influences as varied as the history of New Orleans rhythm & blues, an encyclopedic knowledge of hip-hop and an affinity for classic rock into his wide-ranging musical palette. Davis is also a masterful lyricist, offering barbed political commentary, social satire and raw observations torn straight from the heart. “Davis is a morbidly ironic writer in the mold of Randy Newman, balancing sweet melodies with dark thoughts to create comic imbalance in his songs,” Swenson wrote in OffBeat Magazine.

Tonight, join us for the latest in an ongoing series about New Orleans musicians who helped rebuild the city after Hurricane Katrina. Author John Swenson will interview Davis Rogan about his music and his relationship with the HBO dramatic series Treme. Rogan will also play songs he’s written that appear in the Treme series, and Swenson will read passages about Davis from his book New Atlantis: Musicians Battle for the Future of New Orleans, which has just been released in paperback. Copies of New Atlantis and albums by Davis Rogan will be available for purchase.
