Ruskin’s Black Cloud

video still from James Walsh, Constable's Clouds, 8 min., 2009Date: Friday, November 6
Time: Doors at 7, Event at 8
Admission: $5

As the last event during my show On Clouds, I will present an evening focused on the clouds of the English writer on art and nature John Ruskin (1819-1900) and the English landscape painter  John Constable (1776-1837).
After a short introduction on Ruskin and the black cloud that plagued the last thirty years of his life, I’ll read an abbreviated version of his original 1884 lecture entitled “The Storm-Cloud of the Nineteenth Century,” which I’ve just republished as a limited-edition pamphlet. The pamphlet will be available for sale after the lecture.

To conclude the evening I’ll introduce and show my video Constable’s Clouds (12 min., 2009), which looks at Constable’s cloud painting period on Hampstead Heath in the early 1820s, when Ruskin was just a small child.
